Description

Comprises 1 autograph letter from Bannister to Charles [Kemble] dated 31 December 1825 (with a transcript), 2 prints of John Bannister, 1 of which is dated 1 June 1808, the other extracted from the Lady's Magazine for June 1817, and 1 print of the Rev. W. Bannister, of Arundel, probably a relative of John. The bound volume also contains a typescript biography of Bannister based on the entry for him in the Dictionary of National Biography.

The material was formerly bound into a volume containing also a transcript of the letter, which is now shelved in a separate author/alphabetical sequence following the main sequence of Miscellaneous Letters.

John Bannister (1760-1836), the comedian, was the son of Charles Bannister, actor and vocalist. John was a student at the Royal Academy, and first appeared at the Haymarket Theatre in 1778. That year and the next, he was engaged as a stock actor at Drury Lane, where he subsequently performed in many roles. He was acting-manager of Drury Lane in 1802 and 1803, and retired in 1815.
