Description

Comprises an autograph letter from Alma-Tadema to William H. Booth (with transcript), an engraved portrait of him extracted from the Illustrated London News for 6 May 1876, and a press-cutting concerning his house in St. John's Wood extracted from the East Anglian Star for 10 September 1921.


The material was formerly bound into a volume containing also transcripts of the letters, which is now shelved in a separate author/alphabetical sequence following the main sequence of Miscellaneous Letters.

Biography or history

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912), the painter, was born in Holland, trained in Antwerp and Paris, settled in London in 1870, and became a British citizen in 1873. He was knighted in 1899. His works chiefly depict subjects from the Merovingian period, ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome.
