Apparently a copy of Sharp's unpublished manuscript work usually known by the title 'Observations on the coinage of England'.


Bound in contemporary calf and rebacked with compartments and gilt lettering on the spine which reads: ESSAY ON ENGLISH MONEY. SHARP. MS. BROTHERTON COLLECTION. Written by an amanuensis or later copyist in a neat professional hand. Ff.2-106v are paginated by the scribe 1-210. Ff.106v-186v are blank. Ff.83-84 (pp.165-168) are folding leaves with tables written only on the inner pages. Ff.187-188r contain an index to the essay in page order. On f.1v is pasted an earlier piece of paper bearing several inscriptions, including 'Johannes Sharp','Thomas Sharp','J(?) Hepworth August 3 1633', and 'E libris Johannis Sharp 1691'.

Biography or history

John Sharp (1645-1714), a Cambridge graduate, became archbishop of York in 1691. For fuller details of his life and achievements see the Dictionary of National Biography.
