Description

Contains prose, dramatic pieces, and 142 poems, mostly anonymous, but including 10 by Robert Southwell (1561-1595) and 17 by Josuah Sylvester (1563-1618).

The text was compiled in the second part of the 17th century. The manuscript is mainly written in a single hand, but with later additions in other hands. It may come from Derbyshire as the village of Parwich is mentioned. Some of the owners had the surname Alsop which is common in the county.

A considerable number of owners and readers have written their names in the volume including Thos Allsop, John Allsopp, John Marriot, Pegey Marriott and Margrat Marriot. The earliest dated name is that of Henry Gould 1680.
