Description

A late nineteenth-century traveller’s album of pressed flowers, accompanied with pencil sketches illustrating the locations in which they were picked. There are also occassional postcards and prayer cards with religious verses and sayings.

Locations covered by the sketches and flower samples include Seathwaite, Malvern, the Derbyshire areas of Ashover, Thorpe and Dovedale, Ilkley, Knapton, Lichfield, Leamington, Guernsey, and Reading. There is also a sample of edelweiss from Switzerland. The sketches show features such as mountains, rock formations and village buildings.

The name Day occures on the prayer cards which could be a clue to the herbarium's owner.

Oblong album with navy morocco binding and gold and blind tooled pannelling, made up of 34 leaves. There are 62 mounted and annotated flower specimens and 60 pencil sketches of corresponding views, 300 x 210 mm.
