Description

Group of 22 letters written by John Cowper Powys to Jessie Cormack, one letter to Cormack from Phyllis Playter and a copy of one further letter written by Cormack to Patrick Kavanagh describing her impressions of Cowper Powys.

Cowper Powys and Playter's letters are kept with typescript transcriptions.

Cormack, a Sheffield based musician, had begun a correspondence with Powys in 1956, after she wrote to express her admiration for his work. She visited Powys and Playter at Blaeenau Ffestiniog in 1958 - much of her letter to Kavanagh describes their meeting. The correspondence continued until 1962, when Powys became too ill to write.

Provenance

Jessie Cormack donated the letters to the University of Leeds in 1978, at the suggestion of George Wilson Knight.
