Description

The collection includes White's research papers and drafts of articles on various aspects of food history. There is material relating to her engagement activities including talks and events about food history. These encompass projects with Friends of Baroque Music in Yorkshire and the Leeds Symposium of Food History and Traditions.

White was working on a commentary of MS 506 'An anonymous collection of cookery, household and medical recipes, mid-17th to later 18th century' housed in Leeds Cultural Collections. The collection contains draft transcriptions of the manuscript, a draft commentary and research notes.

There are research papers, menus and place settings for events featuring meals with period themes.

The material has been kept in the order in which White filed it.

Biography or history

Eileen White (1943-2023) was a food historian. An expert on domestic English Cookery in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, she also had interests in drama and dance. Eileen was born in Bradford in 1943. In 1960s, she lived and worked in the former Czechoslovakia, before returning to the UK to work at the BBC. Eileen undertook a PhD on the York Mystery Plays at the University of Leeds. For many years she was closely involved in the Leeds Symposium on Food History and Traditions. Eileen wrote many articles and varied presentations on food history. She died in 2023.
