Description
Charlotte Starkie has copied music by Webbe, Cooke, Mazzinghi, Mason and Miss Smythe into the volume. She has included 'A Favorite Troop as Performed by the Band of the First Battalion Fourth Class of the Manchester and Salford Volunteers'. Charlotte has drawn diagrams of the pedals on a harp and has added some instructions for playing it. There are instructions for the steps of the dance 'Drops of Brandy' or 'Strip the Willow'.
Charlotte began filling in the volume from the beginning, but turned it upside down and began filling it from the back as well. She has written in pencil and ink. There are a few blank staves.
The quarto volume is 226 x 292 mm, bound in contemporary polished sheep. The title page is engraved. There are 54 pages of manuscript music. Some of the leaves are cut away.
The date is taken from the watermark on the paper.
Biography or history
The book belonged to Charlotte Le Gendre Starkie (1793-1848) the daughter of Le Gendre Pearce Starkie, of Huntroyd, Padiham, Lancashire. Charlotte married Henry Armytage (1796-1861) on 12 June 1819 in Salcombe Regis, Devon. He was an officer in the Coldstream Guards and was the son of Sir George Armytage, the 4th Baronet.
