Description

A document in which Mary Queen of Scots, also known as Mary Stuart, appoints Monsieur Jean de Champhoun, sieur du Ruisseau, as her procurator general. Champhoun is to take charge of Mary's monetary affairs in Vermandois, France, receiving all the money that Gilles du Verger her former Chancellor, has collected in her name. The document was written and signed in the presence of Balthasar Huslin, one of Mary's valets de chambre, at Tutbury Castle where Mary was imprisoned at the time.

The document has also been signed by Claude Nau also known as Claude de la Boisselière Nau, who was Mary's secretary, and by Bastien Pagez and Jérôme Pasquier (otherwise Hierosme Pasquier) her valets-de-chambre. On the verso someone has written the date 1585 and brief references to Pagez, Pasquier, Huslin and Duverger.

The document is on vellum.

The folder also contains a descriptive entry for the document which may have been used in an exhibition and a clipping from an unidentified auction catalogue. There is a description of the document in French and a translation in English with a commentary.

The folder and documents are housed in a green crushed morocco portfolio by Riviere with the inscription 'Mary Stuart, Document signed by Nau (her secretary), Pages (her valet-de-chambre) and Pasquier (her valet-de-chambre)' on the front. Sir Edward Allen Brotherton's bookplate is pasted to the inside front cover.

Provenance

The document appeared as Lot 594 in an auction at Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge in June 1924.
