Description

Press cutting titled 'An Academy of fine portraits—and suprises' published in the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Mercury on 3 May 1952, in which the art critic W.T. Oliver reviews the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition and mentions Maurice de Sausmarez's portrait of the poet James Kirkup, describing it in the following terms: 'Some people may think this a little too mannered, since the poet holds his pen in one hand and a shell in the other; but it has a charming gravity about it (like an Eighteenth Century portrait of Gray or Pope), and friends of Mr. Kirkup will find it engaging and perceptive'.
