Description

Handwritten letters and postcards from Ben Nicholson to Maurice de Sausmarez during the development of the special issue of Studio International dedicated to Nicholson and edited by de Sausmarez. Nicholson praises de Sausmarez's writing on his work, discussing his experiments with the 'aquaforte' medium in etching and sends de Sausmarez an example, Nicholson's comments on de Sausmarez's book 'Basic Design: The Dynamics of Visual Form' (1964) and thoughts about teaching art, providing recommendations for exhibitions, recollections of early education, inviting de Sausmarez to visit them in Switzerland, de Sausmarez's introductions to catalogues of exhibitions of Nicholson's work, challenges with the printmaking process, praise for Bridget Riley's work and award of the International Prize for Painting at the Venice Biennale in 1968, the progression of his artistic career, advice on who to contact about his early work, choosing illustrations that do not duplicate the publications by Thames and Hudson and the Tate Gallery, permission to quote from letters, arrangements for de Sausmarez's visit, hopes for the recovery of his daughter Emma from a broken arm, corrections to the text, thoughts about page layout, ensuring contributors receive copies of the special issue, discussion of Piet Mondrian's work and the deletion of a comment on Naum Gabo by Henry Moore.
