Comprises a collection of Wilkie's correspondence with several persons, notably Thomas Macdonald, dated ca. 1806-1849, together with many engravings taken from original pictures painted by Wilkie, printed extracts concerning Wilkie's life and work, and catalogues of his pictures printed both during his lifetime and after his death


The volume is finely bound in dark green leather with marbling on all endpapers and gilt lettering embossed on the spine as follows: WILKIE HOLOGRAPH CORRESPONDENCE in addition to floral patterns. All page edges are gilded also.

Biography or history

Sir David Wilkie (1785-1841) was a Scottish painter who was appointed painter in ordinary in 1830 and received a knighthood in 1836. For full details of his life and work see the Dictionary of National Biography.
