Description
Three letters from Quentin Bell to Maurice de Sausmarez, one typewritten and two handwritten. The handwritten letter dated 7 May 1959 mentions that Bell was expecting to hear form de Sausmarez and suggests that they meet in Newcastle or Leeds, where he will shortly travel to see the art galleries. The typewritten letter dated 24 May [1959] thanks de Sausmarez for the documents that have given him a sense of the course at the University of Leeds and agreeing with de Sausmarez's principles. Bell notes that students are about to start art school at a later age and teaching will have to adapt to this and suggests that Leeds establish and Honours Course in Fine Art that is not pure art history. Bell suggests that de Sausmarez's proposed courses are weighted too far towards the academic and not enough towards practice, suggesting that students specialise sooner and learn social history and the history of ideas. He goes on to make further suggestions and plans to meet de Sausmarez in Leeds. The
undated handwritten letter in pencil requests that de Sausmarez send information about what negatives will be needed the following week.
