Description
Aquatinted throughout, including title page. The title and imprint are taken from the title-plate. originally published as A new drawing book of ornaments... in 1796 (see Note below).
This work was originally published by T. Simpson, and Darling and Thompson with the title-plate reading 'A New Drawing Book Of Ornaments In The Antique Style... London MDCCXCVI' (see Harris 737). The plates were all printed in sepia, and the work was probably issued in six parts of six plates each between 1794 and January 1796. For the present reprint the title-plate has been reworked, with 'New Drawing Book' replaced by 'Collection' and two of the characters in the date reversed. The imprint lines have also been removed from all the plates. It is not known who published the suite in its present form, but this state seems to have been more widely disseminated than its predecessor, and may well have been sold by a cartel of London booksellers, perhaps with the involvement of Richardson's son William.
