Description

Two title plates and 31 other plates. Bedford Collection copy E150 has 9 numbered plates in sequence, of which 1 is title plate A book of ornaments by Matthias Lock, 12 numbered non-sequentially, and 11 unnumbered plates, including 9 of chimney pieces.

Added title page: A book of ornaments / drawn and engrav'd by M. Lock; principally adapted for carvers, but generally useful for various decorations in the present taste (London: published by John Weale, No 59 High Holborn), the 1831 re-issue by Weale.

18 plates signed T. Chippendale del., some engraved by B. Clowes or J. Kirk, published in earlier works (18th cent.) under [Thomas] Johnson's name, for example, from Johnson's To the Right Honble. Lord Blakeney, 1758, see Bedford Collection A130. Plate 2 from Six Sconces by Matthias Lock published by Sayer in 1768 and re-issued by Weale in 1858-9. Work spuriously ascribed to Chippendale. The publisher erased Johnson's name and substituted Chippendale's. Cf. Thomas Johnson and English rococo / H. Hayward. 1964. p. 3-4.
