Description
Folio copy of score for Bach'48' ('The Well-Tempered Clavier, BWV 846–893') believed to have been in the possession of Franz Liszt whilst at Bayreuth. The manuscript is written in black ink and appears to be the work of a professional copyist, with occasional pencil annotations in another hand. The manuscript is kept in a box with wrappings which address the manuscript to Liszt. The wrappings were later reused by Liszt to send the manuscript to Lina Schmalhausen.
The collection also includes a folder of materials relating to research into the manuscript, including associated correspondence, notes and photographs of a plaster cast of Listz's hand, Emil von Sauer, Max Reger, Fritz Haeckel and Hans Solty. The file also includes material relating to the manuscript bequest to Leeds.
Provenance
Wrappers kept with the manuscript indicate that it was given by Liszt to Lina Schmalhausen. The manuscript was later in the possession of Hans Solty before being aquired by John Coates, then Associate Director of Leeds College of Music. The manuscript and associated materials were bequeathed to Special Collections by Coates.
