Description
Early on in their formation Women's Aid realised the importance of collecting and preserving newspaper articles. The cuttings that have been collated over the decades document the history of the organisation as well as domestic abuse in general.
There are various sub-series of press cuttings, all collected through different periods and with different approaches to ordering. For example, we have cuttings arranged thematically, geographically and chronologically.
The earlier clippings were collated through press cutting companies and displayed on index cards, notably using Durrant's Press Cuttings Ltd., whereas later newspaper cuttings were collected by Women's Aid themselves and presented in folders. We recommend reading the description and date range for each sub-series to know the full context, as well as making thorough use of the accompanying indexes to search for key words, topics and specific dates.
Later clippings moved away from index cards and were instead collected into ring binder folders, using a mixture of cut out clippings and photocopies. These tend to be organised by year.
System of arrangement
These press cuttings are organised either thematically, geographically or chronologically.
