Description

[Side 1] Wilsey tells anecdote about seeing apparition that turned out to be woman in nightdress looking for lost cat, recalls working in coal mine from age of twelve, describes long hours, harsh working conditions and meagre wages. [Side 2] Wilsey describes local coal seam and explains different methods of coal extraction, recalls having to 'lig' [= lie] down to dig coal for 'hurrier' [= coal carriers] to take away, describes digging out 'bearing' [= waste material] and transferring to 'gobbing' [= excavated space filled with waste material] and riddling coal into car for removal to surface, discusses changes to mining since mechanisation, briefly talks about decline of handlooms in village after increase in US tariff, comments village nearly 'clammed' [= starved] to death, reflects on shift in balance of industry between textiles and collieries.
