Description
[Side 1] Tom talks about decline of local coal mining industry, comments mechanical coal-cutters too expensive and unsuitable for local pits as roofs too low and 'bracklesome' [= brittle], outlines various jobs at pit, incl. maintenance of pit props. [Side 2] Tom tells series of anecdotes about donkey kept by local farmer to keep cattle company incl. once falling off and donkey getting in apple orchard, briefly mentions father performing songs and clog dance at Preston Guild.

Tom b. Mawdesley, aged 79, local school till aged 12, whole life in district; wife b. Eccleston.
