Description

[Side 1] Anty talks about reserves of limestone, ironstone and coal locally despite lack of mining, extolls virtue of fresh lime straight from 'kill' [= kiln] for farming, recalls Consett man praising quality of local ironstone. [Side 2] Anty describes vast seam of coal locally, surprised at lack of interest, criticises National Coal Board, compares cost of transporting coal by road and by rail.

Biography or history

Anty b. Wark, aged 74; local school till aged 12, then farm-worker, collier, sheep-shearer, owns local bus service; family owned local coal mine for generations; former county champion bagpiper.
