Description
[Side 1] Conversation between George, Tommy, Douglas, Willie and Mrs. Civil about fishing incl. incident when they were caught poaching salmon in Wark burn at night, alerted by friends on bank and hid in water, best ever catch 38lb, Douglas talks about about gardening incl. recent dry weather and plentiful blossom, discussion of local weather lore incl. 'if the oak's in before the ash we're sure to get an awful splash', brief discussion about fox hunting. [Side 2] Conversation between George, Sydney, Willie, Tommy and Douglas, Sydney outlines his daily travels, recites saying 'five old wives of Wall', memories of characters in Birtley village in past, discussion of local tradition of first-footing [= New Year's Eve custom], George recalls one particular first-footing occasion, brief discussion of sport incl. Newcastle United, tennis, horse-racing.
