Description
[Side 1] George talks briefly about killing pig and preparing carcass, comments on lack of opportunity for education in past, describes first jobs on farm, incl. keeping bullocks of castle grounds and 'bird-tenting' [= scaring birds from crops], recalls working long hours, George and Mary talk fondly of country dancing in village hall and public houses in past, memories of Swinstead Feast, mention custom of paying accordion player twopence every third dance. [Side 2] George reflects on itinerant farm work, briefly mentions farms he worked on locally before becoming foreman at Swinstead estate for over thirty years and working for four generations of the Willoughby family. Note: Recording date 1952-01-07 noted by ear, 1952-01-14 written on lacquer disc label.

George aged 83; school till aged 11. Mary b. Swinstead, aged 80, whole life in Swinstead.
