[Side 1] Harry tells anecdote about farm worker seeking employment, describes Sussex waggon incl. 'varnicles' [= cart-ladder, detachable boards fixed to cart to increase load capacity], discusses traditional harvesting incl. building and thatching stack and use of 'spars' [= hazel rod used to secure thatch], talks about Uppark estate and cattle on Compton Downs, describes own house and garden, compares farming now and in past incl. wages and working conditions, reflects on introduction of tractors and machinery, describes typical working day on farm in past incl. ploughing with horses. [Side 2] Mr Francis describes typical working day on farm in past, recalls keeping time according to passing trains, talks about ploughing, lists jobs incl. farm worker, gardener, carter delivering lime to builders before working with father, mentions enlisting for World War 1, describes how to build 'rick [= stack of corn], recalls cutting corn with sickle or 'fag-hook' [= hooked scythe], compares working
