Description
[Side 1] Mr Ede compares farming now and in past, reflects on improved working conditions due to introduction of farm machinery, talks about work at Broome Hall, comments estate now in decline, describes wages and working conditions as gardener, lists village sports, reflects on increased reliance on car and motorbikes and decline in walking, comments briefly on space exploration, describes carts and waggons, comments working conditions much improved due to mechanisation. [Side 2] Mr Ede recalls being able to handle particularly difficult pony, lists typical jobs as gardener incl. hedging, mowing with 'fagging-hook' [= sickle] and delivering vegetables to station, mentions owner of Broome Hall (Sir Alec Brown), describes maintenance of estate incl. lake, recalls children frequently being beaten by village blacksmith for upsetting horses, tells anecdote about pony bolting while son was alone in cart, lists owners of Leith Hill Tower, describes own house, recalls keeping pigs and cow,
comments council cottages have indoor lavatory, discusses pruning fruit, recalls cold and wet winters.
