Description
[Side 1] Reuben describes 'thrail' [= flail, implement used for threshing corn by hand], talks about mowing grass/corn with scythe, explains how to build 'rick' [= haystack], recalls joining village band aged sixteen, lists venues played incl. Christmas tours on foot, discusses music lessons with local teacher. [Side 2] Reuben lists first jobs as apprentice blacksmith incl. making 'shut links' [= links for chains], staples and S-hooks, recalls shoeing first horse at West Woodhay farm, discusses agricultural machinery repairs and gate ironwork, recalls making tips, hobnails and bars for shoes, talks about wages as 'improver' [= person placed in trade for work experience at reduced wages] at agricultural engineering firm making rake teeth for 'elevators' [= machine used for raising hay/straw to top of stack] and waggon and cart iron work, explains piece work pay included wages for own 'striker' [= assistant operator who wields heavy sledge-hammer].

Reuben b. Inkpen, aged 83, local school till aged 11, whole life in Inkpen except during WW1; father b. Inkpen; mother b. Inkpen.
