Description

[Side 1] Mr Stiff talks about working on Duke of Wellington's estate, recalls being fascinated by kitchens, kitchen range and cooking implements, comments frequently got lost as size and layout of Stratfield Staye House extremely confusing, mentions Duke preferred work to be done while he was away so occasionally had to hide if Duke returned home unexpectedly, tells series of anecdotes about working at Farley Castle incl. friend's amusement at Lady having to use ear trumpet. [Side 2] Albert reflects on changes during lifetime incl. wages and cost of living, Albert discusses own wages before and after World War 1, reflects on reduction in farm labour and impact of mechanisation, lists typical team of farm workers in past, recalls pride in ploughing with horses, lists types of 'rick' [= stack] built locally, explains system of wages for piece work during harvest.
