[Side 1] Robert lists best apples for making cider, describes father's cider-press, reflects on changes in village incl. sale of Dutton family's (Lord Sherburne) estate, recalls searching for sheep in snow drifts, discusses severe winters in past, recalls father always keeping bushel of wheat for grinding at local mill and mother baking bread in oven heated with 'faggots' [= bundle of sticks used as fuel]. [Side 2] Robert lists first jobs on farm after leaving school aged 9, discusses childhood pranks in past incl. regularly disturbing courting couple by tapping on window with nail attached to long string, recalls vicar's sister leading carol singing practices at Christmas, describes typical Christmas food and tradition of rabbiting trips on Boxing Day, describes entertainment in past incl. skating/sledging on ladder on frozen water meadows in winter, lists children's games incl. marbles, skipping and 'touch-he' [= children's chase game].
