Description

[Side 1] Harry talks about work on farm as 'house boy' [= young domestic servant] from aged 13, describes typical working day incl. working at weekends, talks about building stack incl. use of 'policeman' [= stake placed against stack to maintain stability], recalls occasionally helping beaters during pheasant shoot to supplement income, briefly mentions joining Navy for some years, describes first horse-drawn 'reaper' [= mechanical device for cutting corn]. [Side 2] George recalls seeing threshing with 'frail' [= flail] to produce cattle feed incl. 'cavings' [= chaff/ears separated from corn], tells anecdote about horse that killed hen in stable and became difficult to control, stresses expertise of horsemen in regaining his trust, outlines typical day ploughing with horses incl. break for 'bever' [= mid-morning snack/packed lunch], explains practice of 'balking' [= ploughing in ridges], discusses father's 100 acre farm, explains different roles of ploughmen.
