Description
[Side 1] Phipps talks about family (one of of 14 children, 4 still alive) and living at Red Lion and thatched cottage opposite, recalls accompamying father making deliveries from Oxford, describes regular route and stopping points incl. Kidlington, Thrupp, Shipton (Shipton-on-Cherwell), Castle (Sturdy's Castle pub), Tackley, Old Man Leys, Rousham Gap, Barton Lodge and Hopcroft's Holt often taking 5 hours, explains how he would deliver groceries, paper, parcels etc. then run across fields to catch up with cart along route. [Side 2] Phipps recalls delivering parcels to party at North Aston, describes having to feel his way along hedge and rails as lights from house not visible in fog, comments only knew nature and size of load on arrival at Oxford, mentions occasional need for trace-horse esp. in winter when conditions were difficult on untarmacked roads, recalls riding trace-horse back from Britannia (pub) in Thrupp one Saturday after bad snowfall.
