Description

[Side 1] Frank tells anecdote about getting drunk, describes visit to Crow's Castle and drinking wine before returning home in torrential rain, recalls taking shelter in barn and sleeping in upturned 'crib' [= hay-rack in cow-shed] only to wake up soaking wet as rain flooded in through barn door, subsequently drank wine at Barrington Park and left empty bottles on doorstep of The Fox pub, Jim explains how to make parsnip wine and recalls how he met Frank when Frank (aged 10) and several village boys were trying to 'dab' [= to aim/throw] stones at tin shed and Jim (aged 19 and recently arrived in Sherborne as carter) chased him and caught him, brief discussion about thatched roofs, Jim demonstrates local pronunciation of 'thatching' ('thacking'). [Side 2] Frank and Jim recall ploughing with teams of bullocks, discuss difference between plough, drag and harrow, memories of schooldays incl. half-time system, Frank explains essential dutes of oxman, Jim recalls farm workers regularly tied
'bray' [= bit to restrain restive horse] to trace of bullocks to prompt team to head back and finish work early.
