Description

[Side 1] James talks about first jobs incl. threshing and loading for local bullock farmer, mentions paid half pint of beer per load, recalls frequently returning home whistling and singing, discusses helping father rear pheasants incl. fetching hay for nest boxes, collecting 'setting hens' [= hen ready to brood] from local farm and gathering eggs at nesting time, comments often teased for eating so many hard-boiled eggs, describes outhouse where father cut feed for pheasants and loft where he bred tame rabbits, briefly mentions bitch delivering puppies in shepherd's hut. [Side 2] James describes feeding pheasants in wood and regularly keeping watch for weeks, tells anecdote about setting trap for cat that had killed pheasants, mentions father gamekeeper for 34 years at Gunthorpe, recalls feeding pheasants before and after school, discusses shooting and selling rabbits from door to door, lists local wildlife incl. weasels, stoats, hedgehogs, jays and owls, recalls killing rabbits to cut up
for pheasant feed.
