Description
[Side 1] Harley talks about public houses being open day and night during hop harvest in past, recalls teams of horse-drawn waggons carrying charcoal for drying hops, Roebuck public house popular stopover for 'baiting' [= feeding] horses, demonstrates local pronunciation of Brimfield [= 'Brummle'] and describes May Day Fair and Brimfield Club (Oddfellows Feast). [Side 2] Harley describes typical food at fair, including 'clock biscuits', talks about May Day hiring fair, farm hands were interviewed and given half a crown to secure service for twelve months, explains annual wage usually included board and lodging, lists typical skills required of farm hand, recalls early reaping and mowing machines and 'tedders' and 'swath-turners' [= machines used to dry hay].

Harley b. Brimfield, aged 85, local school till aged 13, whole life in Brimfield except during apprenticeship in Hereford; father b. Leominster, blacksmith; mother b. Brimfield; wife b. Brimfield, teacher.
