Description

[Side 1] George talks about his working life, started as farm worker in Noseley, recalls exhibiting field gate and posts at 1924 Royal Show in Leicester, describes first wages (5 shillings a week) and army supplement during military service, talks with pride about saving to acquire own farm (now owns over 100 acres) and quality of sheep and cattle taken to auction. [Side 2] George talks about sheep farming, explains importance in past of washing and dipping sheep prior to shearing, recalls regularly achieiving top prices at open auction in Granby Hall (Leicester), explains judgement of 'wool-stapler' [= wool merchant] in assessing value and quality of fleece, recalls receiving governent praise for quality of wool during WW2.

George b. Tugby, aged 63, local school till aged 12, whole life in Tugby except for 3 years during WW1; father b. Goadby, farm worker; mother b. Tugby.
