Description
A substantial series of letters addressed to Martin Wight from Humphrey John Moore. Moore and Wight had been school friends at Bradfield School and had corresponded whilst at University and in the years following. The correspondence trails off from the late 1930s, with the final letter sent in 1950. Letters are often very detailed and give substantial insight into Moore's life and developing poetry. Several letters (particularly those sent around 1936) include drafts of poems.
The collection also includes a long satirical poem 'Mousa Snifferiensis: A short symposium of Scientific Foolery in memoriam of A.P.G.', believed to have been written about science teaching at Bradfield School.
The collection contains c.85 letters with enclosures. The majority (c.57) date between 1932 and 1937, with a further 10 letters up to 1950. 15 letters are undated.
Provenance
The Collection was donated to Special Collections in 2021 by Dr Jeremy Wight, son of Martin Wight. A further accrual of three letters (c.1944-1946) and a longer poem was donated in 2024.
