Binding
16th–17th-century(?) full leather (restored) over thick boards with intricate blind tooled and gilt-embossed decorations (upper and lower cover identical) comprising a two panel design; first panel is constituted by broad blind-tooled border with decorative roll; at its inner angels are gilt floral bouquets in vases with handles; the second panel is constituted by rhombus with blind-tooled broad border roll in centre of first panel; simple gilt flowers at inner angles of rhombus border; a small gilt oval frame containing a small simple flower is the centre piece of the rhombus panel; original spine is not preserved; red text block edges. Binding and item underwent extensive conservation work in the 1990s; item has been rebound and rebacked by conservation; the original covers of boards were remounted on new full leather binding; new spine is gilt-lettered with "MS ROTH 425". MS ROTH/*424 has very similar binding.
