Description
Pictorial 19th century engraved trade card of J. Burley [John Burley]. Large image of brushmakers coat of arms with boar above and knight at either side. Below are four numbered barrels. Brushes suspended from decorative leafwork surrounding arms. Motto 'NEVER DESPAIR' and image of eye of providence at top of card, with motto 'May Love & Unity support our Trade & keep out those who would our rights invade' on banner beneath. Trader details in a variety of typefaces with decorative flourishes.
Transcription: J. BURLEY, Fancy Brush Manufacturer, 12, Horse Fair, Birmingham. Respectfully informs Merchants, Factors & the Trade in general that possessing the advantage of finishing Fancy goods in the London Stile [Style], it enables him to execute his articles in the best possible manner & on terms more advantageous than any house in Town. TRAVELLERS SUPPLIED.
