Description

Simple 19th century letterpress trade card of Deakin, Wilmshurst & Co, with trader details on obverse and directions for using their patent range on reverse. Remains of previous paper mount and glue present on reverse.

Transcription of obverse: DEAKIN, WILMSHURST & CO. No. 62 & 63, St. John Street, West Smithfield, LONDON. FURNISHING IRONMONGERS, AND Manufacturers of Patent Kitchin [Kitchen] Ranges, Registers and Fashionable Stoves of every description, Copper, Brass, Iron and Tin Kitchen Utensils, Japan Tea Trays, Cutlery, &c. Bells neatly hung on improved principles, and Smiths' Work in general. Smoky Chimnies Cured by Contract. BRIDGES, PRINTER, 104, ST JOHN STREET.

Transcription of reverse: Directions for using DEAKIN & Co's Patent Range. EVERY morning draw out the two slides in the front and the one under the back, and see also that the ashes are discharged; then fill the boiler. If the oven and boiler are wanted to be heated, draw out the slides in the pipes; if you want to bake or steam, the Register should be turned to Brisk; should the oven be too hot, turn up the Register to Moderate, or push the slide in the pipe. If flat irons are wanted, apply the plate over the fire, turn the point to Brisk, and open the slides in each pipe, then irons may be heated up on the same and on the surface at the back; if in the course of ironing there appears an inclination to smoke, clear the ashes from the back in the same way you do in the morning; and be careful not to put too many coals on at once. About once a fortnight use the raker through the small doors in the front to clear the same from soot; the most particular part to rake is round the Right hand
back corner of the oven, and the Left hand back corner of the boiler. When the chimney is swept, wind the Register to Slow, and let the sweep take down the pipes and sweep them. To cook by steam the same time to be allowed as boiling, with the exception to allow for the joint, &c. to be warmed through.
