Description

The collection includes two exercise books containing costume designs by June Cashman created while she was a student at the Leeds College of Technology in the early/mid-1950s. June has signed one of the volumes with her birth name June Harris. The books feature designs, patterns and measurements for modern and historic costume, There are guidelines for making up the garments next to the patterns. The books contain size guides for children and women and a few coloured swatches of material.

Loose pages in the books include manuscript notes in Cashman's hand and some printed patterns and instructions. None of the patterns are full size, but are to scale. One set of notes is written on headed paper with the address 'Manor Cottage, 53 Bunker Lane, Staincliffe, Batley'. The inserts include a telegram to June Cashman's husband P, J. Cashman from a friend, Andy, dated October 1955 congratulating him on his marriage.

There is also a file containing around 60 pages of well-executed drawings. Many of these are for historic costumes ranging from those of ancient Eygpt, to court costumes of 15th century, to 1940s outfits. One design from 1948 refers to 'Shiaparelli's fish-finned dress of '34'. Cashman has drawn a series of women's hats through the ages and has written an essay entitled 'Hats and Headdresses'. Loose pages at the back of the file document some of her student assignments. There is a loose newspaper cutting showing a woman in Edwardian dress.
