Description

This file contains 2 letters to Herbert Read from Cecil Woolf and a carbon copy of a response from Read. The file also includes typescript carbon copy statement by Herbert Read for Woolf's 'Authors take sides on Vietnam' (2ff).

Correspondence relates to a book of published statements on the Vietnam War that Woolf is organising, in the style of Nancy Cunard's Author's Take Sides on the Spanish War (1937).

Read's statement begins: 'The presence of the forces of the United States in Vietnam cannot be defended on any ground other than that of political expediency, and such expediency is based on an almost infantile conception of social realities.'
