Summerfield expresses his deep gratitude to Herbert Read, whose varied works, he argues has helped him at different stages of his life. He writes that Read's A Coat of Many Colours, 'formed the starting point for so many of those intense, sharp, provoking and complicated arguments that charcterize one's intellectual awakening.'
