Description
This file contains 7 letters to Herbert Read from Adrian Stokes. Carbon copies of responses from Read are included in the file
Letters include mutual appreciation of each other's writing as well as critique. Read agrees to advocate Stokes' work to Wesleyan University Press, as his publisher is finding it difficult to place in the United States. 2 letters from John Harvard-Watts are included in the file.
Letters include the possibility of Read becoming a Trustee at the Tate Gallery, and later, whether he will be attending meetings. Stokes writes to Read: 'Of course you will know that I, as so many others, think that you should have been first choice as Tate Trustee, 40, 30, 20, 10 years ago. Disgusting as that position has been it would be an enormous benefit, though it could not put the past right, if you were to join even now.'
