Description

Letters and associated material addressed to Read from Spender. The file includes three letters written on Encounter headed notepaper; the first letter concerns the 1956 Hungarian uprising with enclosed forwarded communication from Albert Camus requesting signatories for a demand tthat the 'General Assembly of the United Nations examine without delay the systematic extermination of the Hungarian people'; two later letters mention Spender's work at the Listener and discuss Read's submissions to Encounter. The file also includes a manuscript copy of 'Not palaces, an era's crown' titled 'To Herbert Read, this poem he liked when we were younger'.
