Description

1 lengthy detailed letter to Herbert Read from Bryan Robertson, Director of the Whitechapel Gallery (4ff).

Robertson writes to Read who has recently been ill and paraphrases a conversation about Read that he has had with Colin MacInnes: 'The great thing about H.R. is his courage, which is absolute, and moral fearlessness - that man could confront a vast & angry, hostile crowd & subdue them with reason & composure.'

Robertson refers to a forthcoming show that he and Read are both working on and relates a recent visit to Barbara Hepworth who he reports is in a wheelchair that she manipulates with 'splendid theatricality.' He confirms that although some work has lacked new vision, 'B. has also done some of her most remarkable & beautiful work recently,' particularly, a 'huge piece' called 'Walk Through' 'which is her best for many years & really extends herself.'

Regarding his work at the Whitechapel Gallery, he writes that although he loves the place, and is thrilled that it is now properly recognised, that he is not reconciled to staying, and must move on one day, perhaps abroad.
