Description
This file contains letters to Herbert Read from Eva van Hoboken.
The letters relate to several different projects: Hoboken translated Read's abstract poems from his collection Vocal Avowels (1959) , for publication in Worte Sagen Aus (1962), where the English text and German translations were printed together, accompanied by prints from Ben Nicholson.
Hoboken, who lived in Ascona, Switzerland, was a regular attendee of the Eranos meetings, which Read also attended, and she met there Dr Suzuki. Many of the letters relate to Sengai: the Zen Master, a book written by Suzuki, which Hoboken edited and was eventually published by Faber in 1971. Read provided the Preface.
Several letters also refer to the sale of Van Gogh's 'A Field with Yellow Flowerets', and a still-life by Cezanne, both owned by Hoboken. Read suggests that Paul Mellon might be interested in the Van Gogh.
