Description
This file contains 1 letter to Herbert Read from Charles Harrison and carbon copy of Read's response.
Charles Harrison, who was studying at the Courthauld Institute under the supervision of Alan Bowness, writes to Read with queries regarding his research into Unit One. Read's response highlights the informal nature of the group and the spontanaeity inherent in the modern art movement in the UK in the 1930s.
He writes: @The formation of Unit One was a very informal affair and nothing in the nature of regular meetings took place. In so far as there was any coordination I think I was responsible for it.
[...] As I emphasize in the article called A Nest of Gentle Artists, which is reprited in the Marlborough Catalogue, the formation of the Unit One group and indeed of the modern movement in this country around 1930, was essentially spontaneous, but it may be that without any deliberate intention on my part I acted as the catalyst.'
