Description

This file contains 7 letters to Herbert Read from Peggy Guggenheim.

The letters are brief but some refer to Guggenheim's alternating wishes for her collection after her death: one option being the creation of a foundation, for which Read agreed to be a director, along with Alfred Barr, Bernard Reis, James Sweeney and Guggenheim herself. Another option was for the collection to go to the Tate. Included in the file is a letter from Norman Reid, Director of the Tate, which refers to this possibility.

Other letters refer to Pegeen Guggenheim's death in 1967, and an exhibition by Tancredi. Read provided a short evaluation of the artist, a carbon copy of which is included in the file.
