Description

This file contains 2 letters to Herbert Read from the artist Lawrence Gowing, successor to Quentin Bell as head of fine art at Leeds.

Gowing writes about feeling close to Read in Leeds. 'there is a positive sense that art studies in Leeds are under your invisible but benevolent and influential patronage - just as the practice of the arts is under Henry's. Our little department falls under both: we have a lot of good painters and reasonable historians who are benefitting from the immunity from the rat-race [...]'

One letter from Gowing is dated 17 July 69, but is possibly misdated, as Read's death more than a year earlier would have been well known to Gowing.
