Description
This file contains 2 letters to Herbert Read from T.S. Eliot, and 1 manuscript poem. The letters are dated 1927 and 1959: the poem, which is to commemorate an 'anniversary', may have been sent for Read's 70th birthday. The letter dated 31 January 1927 asks Read to review Massis' book (presumably for Eliot's journal the Criterion). Eliot writes 'I think it is worth noticing, but if you don't do it no one else is competent.' A note (possibly in the handwriting of Ben Read) notes the letter was found within a copy 'Reflexions sur l'art du roman' by Henry Massis. The second letter, dated 25 June 1959, is on Faber and Faber headed paper and responds to a proof sent by Read of his reply to C.P. Snow (?). Eliot writes that Read's response in 'admirable', but takes issue at what he sees as a comparison of himself with other modern writers. 'Nobody's opinions could be more different from those of Pound than mine: I don't think I have a great deal in common with Yeats, and Lewis is so
emphatically the destructive critic that it is not easy to say what his political opinions were [...].' Eliot's poem (n.d.) is dedicated to Read: 'To the poet and writer of Some of the most distinguished prose in our time (I am still beguiled By his Green Child) [...]'
