Description
This file contains 4 manuscript letters to Herbert Read from Richard Church: 1 written in 1933 and 3 written 1965 - 1968. In the letter written in April 1933 Church responds to a poem which is unnamed in the letter, but seems to be The End of a War (1933), in particular Meditation of the Waking English Officer. Church writes that the poem has 'haunted' him: 'I feel that for the first tiem you have unified the various elements of your personality, adn the result is a poem of the major kind. What an eventful thing to say nowadays, in our age of ghastly and hopeless experiment!' Later letters relate family and other news, particularly the death of Church's second wife, Katya, his marriage to Dorothy Beale, and their home in the grounds of Sissinghurst.
