Description
This file includes 2 signed typescript letters addressed to Herbert Read from Elias Canetti, alongside a manuscript note in support of Canetti written by Kathleen Raine. Canetti won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1981. Canetti's first letter is sent on the suggestion of Kathleen Raine and includes an account of his book Mass and Power (published as Mass und Macht, and Crowds and Power). A note from Kathleen Raine sent 'in confidence', clearly states her belief in Canetti's work and his need for a sustained period of supported scholarship to complete it. She writes, 'The difference between my work and his, I think you will find, is that mine is a valuable piece of secondary scholarship, his a piece of really original thought. [...] As between Canetti and myself, he is the more valuable life to save, as it were.' Included in the file is a copy of a letter sent from the Bollingen Trust, enclosing an application for a fellowship or grant-in-aid. A later letter from Canetti to Read
thanks him for his help: “I am sending you my book [Mass und Macht, 1960] for which you have done so much [...] I very much want you to have it as it owes a good part of its existence to you”.
